The little plastic sign by the cash counter at Sense Appeal, a coffee shop on Spadina Ave., says it all. Above the image of two familiar credit cards are the words “’Course we take PayPal.”The online payment service is announcing the ability for consumers to use its smartphone app to pay at 50 bars, restaurants and food trucks across Toronto. Already available to varying degrees in the U.S., UK and Australia for the past year, the company is now bringing the capability to Canada. The app is free for iPhone, Android and Windows mobile devices. The app requires a selfie of the user, and is based on a location-based check-in model, so users sign into an establishment, order their food, and then when it comes to pay, the cashier sees a photo of the customer, who then has to swipe to the right to pay for their items. It works with companies that are using TouchBistro’s iPad-based point-of-sale technology and has been in soft-launch mode around town, so people have already started using it.
