Feature – Woocomerce POS: The Current Buzz

Points of sale systems have been around for some time now and they are quite popular with store owners. A good point of sale system or POS system can tally sales on a website, in a store, track inventory, bill the products, assess taxes, and carry out a range of other functions. Most vendors sell the entire software and hardware package to website and store owners and you are good to go. However, there are thousands of POS systems online and choosing just one is a little tough. Most website and business owners research systems and then purchase a system which will stay with them for a very long time. Ideally, most of these systems are quite good but they are dated. As technology is changing rapidly, most of the newer systems have innovative features that you will not find in older POS systems. One of the newest kids-on-the block is the Woocomerce POS system and a lot of businesses are making the switch to this newer and much better system to do business more effectively.

About WooCommerce

WooCommerce is primarily an open-source eCommerce plug-in for WordPress. The company was set up in 2011 and over the years, it has quickly become one of the most popular WordPress eCommerce plug-ins in the world. At last count, more than 171,000 online retailers now use WooCommerce and it ranks as one of the best eCommerce plug-in sites in the world. The company quickly started producing WordPress themes, plug-ins and extensions and even encouraged users to send in their ideas for development. The company turned over an entire division of its company called WooLabs to work on its themes and it has not looked back since.

Current Developments

Over the last few years, WooCommerce has been actively investigating the POS market for its innovative in-house POS system. The company was planning to release its POS system in 2014 and an early Beta version is already out. The WooCommerce POS system is a blend of WooCommerce functionality with the pure processing power and features offered by Vend. The Beta version is available on the WordPress Plug-in section for download at present. The plug-in is free but it is not for active use. A few features of the system are as follows:

  • Simple and easy to use interface that can connect the virtual website to the realtime store
  • Inventory taking and vendor integration
  • Product search features, product catalog, updating content, adding images and videos, etc
  • Cart notifications, printed receipts, item prices, discount deals, etc.
  • An integrated global billing system that can accept payments from any kind of national or international credit or debit card

Although the Beta Version is already out, the company has clamped down on all other details. Users can download Version 0.2.11 from the WordPress plugin website and try it out themselves. Take the time to try out the software package and understand how it works out. In case you find a bug, you can report it to www.github.com. The company is also offering a demo of the WooCommerce POS system at woopos.com.au/pos if you put in the login/pass: demo/demo. Although we did access the demo, it just shows a single page of the WooCommerce POS. It would be a good idea to download the system and then go through it with a fine toothcomb to find out how it works.

Expectations

Although the WooCommerce POS system is expected to be pretty good, it has very strict standards to meet. Companies like Shopify have a very solid foothold in the market and they offer wonderful POS systems that are tough to beat. If WooCommerce wants to make their POS systems the best, they are going to have to work very hard at it. The company states that the POS system will be a modified version of Vend but it remains to be seen. Web developers and websites owners have very high expectations from the company and a good POS system could add substantially to the WooCommerce stable and its overall value.

For website owners and store owners

If you are a hardcore WooCommerce fan, the WC POS system is probably going to be your first purchase as soon as it is out for retail use notes GPL. However, the WC is just the newest entrant in to the multi-million dollar POS market and it will have to prove itself. At present, the software has to prove itself and the Beta version seems to be quite good. Advance reviews have been quite good but as more and more users take up the system, glitches might appear and they will have to be solved. Industry watchers are carefully noting how the system works and advance users have generally been positive about the system. Nonetheless, considering the solid reputation that WooCommerce already enjoys, the POS software could easily land up to be the best in the market.
