An interesting new move from Apple to bolster their Maps offering. Apple has announced Apple Maps Connect, a service where users can connect their Apple user ID to an address, or preferably, a business listing. Using the new, self service portal, the user claims his/her business listing and then then add/edit information about the listing, the end result providing users of Apple Maps with more accurate business listings and related information
According to this article, Authentication happens in real time. Users creating or claiming a listing receive an automated call with a code that’s entered within the Maps Connect site. Posting updates or new listings, however, can take up to a week to show up in the Maps app.
Where Maps Connect is rather interesting is the effort to take Apple Maps indoors. Users have the option of adding additional indoor information about their business. Via the Maps Indoor option, the user provides added information about the property and then can upload data, floor plans and more in a variety of data formats including: CAD, BIM, JPG, SHP, GeoJSON, or other. Obviously the end result here will be for the Apple Maps user to eventually be able to go indoors and likely experience a business or property in a more realistic, 3D environment.
Yes indeed, it’s cool to see Apple realizing the potential of 3D and businesses will also see the opportunities that exist by mapping their assets and infrastructure in 3D – but heck, we already realize this as do the customers and users of our Insight product for land and facilities management!
