London Area Wireless Network brings free, unrestricted Wi-Fi to city’s public spaces

Downtown London BIA partnering with Turnstyle Solutions to enhance Wi-Fi network

London Area Wireless Network brings free, unrestricted Wi-Fi to city’s public spaces.

LONDON and TORONTO, ON – April 17, 2015 – Downtown London and Turnstyle Solutions are proud to announce a new partnership to power the London Area WiFi Network (LAWN), a free outdoor Wi-Fi zone in London, Ontario. Initially launched as a pilot program by Downtown London, the network has grown into one of North America’s largest free outdoor Wi-Fi hotspots, signalling London as a driving force in Canada’s “smart city” movement.

Turnstyle Solutions has partnered with Downtown London to help make the LAWN more accessible and engaging to visitors, office workers, and residents downtown, while offering the BIA important customer analytics.

“Working with Turnstyle Solutions and Meraki products to bring free Wi-Fi to the downtown core is a win for both local businesses and Londoners,” said Janette MacDonald, CEO and General Manager of Downtown London. “Free public Wi-Fi is a cornerstone of a smart, connected city. The LAWN enhances the experience of shoppers and diners downtown, and is an important recruitment tool in attracting new businesses.”

The LAWN pilot program was launched by Downtown London and a volunteer committee chaired by Joel Adams in 2011. After the overwhelmingly positive response from visitors and London residents, the innovative initiative expanded in preparation for the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships in London. The zone now runs between Ridout Street and Wellington Street, York Street and Queens Avenue, as well as further along Dundas Street, King Street and Richmond Row (see map below). The LAWN is also available at select indoor locations, including the Covent Garden Market and Citi Plaza food court.

While the LAWN now features Turnstyle’s easy-to-use interface, the initiative is back stopped by Meraki products. Meraki is the leader in cloud-controlled Wi-Fi, routing and security which enables LAWN to service such a large geographic area.
